Luke 11
17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.  21″Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”  23Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”  24Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”  25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”  27″Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”  28And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.  32When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”  33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. 34″Where have you laid him?” he asked.
”Come and see, Lord,” they replied.  35Jesus wept.  36Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”  37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?”   38Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39″Take away the stone,” he said.
”But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”  40Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”  41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.”  43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

This passage is so illustrative of many of our interactions with the Lord.  Dive as deep in it as you want. :)   What I’d like to focus in on is verse 40:

Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”

Here were two committed, faithful lovers of God, Mary and Martha.  They loved Jesus, they believed Him.  They even believed that He could do anything, but they put it off for a past or future time (“if you were here…”, “…in the resurrection”).  When Jesus showed up, they were happy to see Him, but didn’t think anything was going to happen.

How often do we do this?  We know that God CAN do anything.  We WISH that he would do something many times.  But when Jesus comes face to face with us, we’re more prone to ask Him why He didn’t do something about ________ (enter past dissappointing situation here).  But, at that moment, He is HERE and WANTS to show us His glory, RIGHT NOW!  It’s His desire to show us His goodness right where we are, right NOW!

Can we choose to believe not only that he can, but that He WILL and that He wants to??

Consider your current situation.  Wouldn’t you like to see the glory of God in it?
Consider the church.  Can you believe that He WILL do something NOW to show us His glory?
In light of Sunday’s message, think of those who don’t know Jesus, who are in your life.  Let’s believe that Jesus is THERE and WANTS to show them His glory!

And that is how we should pray!

I hear the Spirit saying, “There are NO limits to me and what I will do, if only you will believe, and open your eyes to see.”

Romans 8
1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, 4 in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.  5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.  9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

The whole chapter of Romans 8 is profound.  I’ve posted here just a portion of the beginning, Some of it may be very familiar to you.  But, I want to encourage you — especially if this is familiar to you — to look beyond the first verse, and really try to absorb the weight of Truth the Apostle Paul is laying out here.  I’d like to highlight a few points.

1.  We are no loner condemned, becase we are FREE! (verse 1)
Verse one is always a favorite because so often the devil tries to make us think that we have ”blown it” when we sin, and accuse us that our efforts to live for God are fruitless.

It is so good to know that we no longer are trying in our own strength to fulfill God’s righteous requirements and hope to earn His favor.  The Spirit of life has SET US FREE from the law of sin an death.

2.  The law was powerless to remove our sin.  So, the Son of God came as a sin offering, to remove the very power of sin from us!  It no longer has power over us!  (verses 2-3)

3.  Because of the life of Jesus IN us (and us being found “in” Christ), the righteous requirements of God CAN BE fully met IN US! (verse 4)
(This part blew me away as I was studying this passage with the youth last week)

Do you see what that says??  God’s holy standards can be FULLY MET IN YOU AND I!!!!

This point is worth stopping and meditating on.  It is a past tense AND a present tense reality!  When we put our faith in Christ, we are made compeletely clean in that moment.  The stain of our sins is removed, the curse of sin is removed, AND the power of sin nature is conquered.  Do you know what that means?!?!  It means that by His mighty power at work within us TODAY, we CAN LIVE HOLY!  We have no obligation to live in sin or to sin at all!  That is why it says that “the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met IN US”.  It’s obvious that Jesus fulfilled all righteousness, but this is saying that by His power, WE can live righteously!!

I find this so remarkable, because:
-It’s easy to think that Jesus fulfilled God’s righteous requirements, but
-It’s hard to imagine that I could ever live so perfectly, and
-MANY people blame sin nature for their habit of continually living in sin

This passage shows us that OUR LIVES can be walked out in righteousness, IF we CHOOSE to live by the Spirit.  It’s not automatic.  We DO have to CHOOSE.  We get to choose every day to say yes to God as He leads us, guides us and empowers us by His Holy Spirit living on the inside.  Conversely, we can choose NOT to listen or obey Him.  When we choose the latter, we sin.  But, sin is not some overwhelming force that grabs us and takes control of us, as some would seem to describe it.  If we are in Christ, it holds no power over us — NONE!  But, we can choose to give ourselves to sin.

4.  Our reality in Christ is to live in accordance with the HOLY Spirit and to have our mind controlled by the Spirit.  His Spirit will also give divine LIFE to our bodies!  (verses 5-11)
It’s our choice!  Life or death.  Freedom or condemnation.

Which will you allow to control you?

p.s. feel free to chime in on the blog:  www.jessiestill.wordpress.com

Revelation 4 is one that we MUST dig DEEP into.  Look at what happens in the first three verses:

Verse 1 – John is shown an open door
Verse 2 – Jesus Himself invites John to “come up” into Heavenly realms, to see “what’s about to take place”
Verse 3 – John sees the STUNNING Throne Room of God.

These three verses alone speak VOLUMES!

1:  There is an OPEN DOOR to us to come up inot the Throne Room!  Notice that it wasn’t just a door that was being opened for John, it was simply a door that was open.  What an invitation!  God desires that we “come up” into His Presece where we can experience the glory of Heaven!  He’s calling us up to see Him, where He is, so that we can view things/events from HIS perspective

2:  Jesus is the One INVITING us into this place — to not stand afar off from Him and what He is doing!  Not only does He not want us to be ingorant of Him and what He’s orchestrating  He desires holy partnership with us, His Bride, in all that He is doing.  What a privilege and responsibility!  What an honor that He would choose us to share in His glory!

3:  Notice what happens here, it’s SO significant.  In verse 2, Jesus tells John that He wants to show him what is about to take place, i.e. the events of the end times.  But, BEFORE He can tell John about the opening of the end-time scroll, trumpet judgments, etc He wants John to SEE THE BEAUTY OF THE THRONE ROOM.

Do you see what’s going on?  Before we find out about facts and events of the End (which can be a bit startling), it is NECESSARY that we be STUNNED and fascinated with the Beauty of the One who is masterminding the whole process in His infinite wisdom.  The only way we can stay steady and rightly understand the events of Revelation is by seeing Him in His beauty and standing in the place of WORSHIP.  If we do not approach our study of Revelation without staying in the place of worship and beholding the glory of God on His Throne, we miss the whole message.

The message of Revelation is THERE IS ONE WHO IS BEAUTIFUL and He is the on the Throne.  The events of Revelation are HIS works, from the place of His beauty, to bring about His beauty in its fullness and without hindrance on the Earth.

The rest of the chapter details the glories of the Throne room and He who sits on the Throne.  Let me assure you that every detail has meaning, this is God, not one description is a wasted word.  Here are some questions to ponder and dialogue with the Holy Spirit about as you are studying –

-Why does He have the appearance of jasper and carnelian (these were precious gemstones, learn a little more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasper and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnelian ).  What could their colors mean?

-Why does the “rainbow” around the Throne look like an emerald?  What could this represent?

-What’s with the four living creatures around the Throne?  Clearly, their full time occupation, and their very reason for existence is this one thing: to gaze on the greatness of God (this is why they have so many eyes — so much to see!), and to declare the glories of what they see.  There’s really only one word they can find to sum it up – HOLY.  And thus they NEVER STOP CRYING OUT- HOLY!  Can you imagine??  Billions and billions of years, every day, every night, see Him, being stunned and crying out, “HOLY!”

Let me suggest this devotional excercize:  Meditate on this Throne room scene as John has tried to capture it in words.  Try to paint the picture in your “mind’s eye” (perhaps even try to sketch it out on paper), and then as you gaze upon it in your spirit, worship the One who sits on the Throne.  Take the word, “holy” and unpack it in prayer, something like this:

“Lord, You are holy.  You are totally other than.  You are so different from everything that I know.  Your beauty is beyond comprehension.  You are completely unblemished in your purity.  You are perfect in every way.  You are completely righteous and blameless in all of Your ways.  All Your ways are right and true.  There is no wisdom above You . . . “

Comments are always welcome!

As we leave 2008 behind and look forward to 2009, what are you expecting?  A new year brings about hope and new possibilities, sometimes starting over where we messed up, etc.

Expectation has an amazing way of defining our existence, have you noticed?  If you expect very little, many times you don’t see much.  If you expect great things, you see amazing things!

Is this simply the power of positive thinking, or something more?

2 Chronicles 1:7 That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”
Matthew 20:32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

These two people got what they asked for, because they expected that the One before them wanted to give it.  And of course there are the oft quoted verses,

Matthew 7:7 ”Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
Matthew 21:22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
James 4:2 You do not have, because you do not ask God.

Now, let’s not debate about “well, you have to ask according God’s will, etc.”  Of course if what you’re expecting or asking  is not the will of God, you probably won’t get it (but, you actually might — that’s another matter).

So, it’s good to expect something, and then to ask God.

What are you expecting and asking God for 2009?

I hear so much about the elections — from everyone.  Everywhere I turn.  It’s almost overload.  And, it’s so easy to get in the mode of criticizing, judging, doomsaying — about candidates, who’s voting for who, etc. etc. etc.

But this morning a song based on Psalm 20 was rolling in my head.

Here’s the verse it’s based on:
Some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.  Psalm 20:7

And, I instantly turned it around, thinking of this election:
Some trust in candidates
Some trust in parties
I will trust in the name of my God.

Some may look stronger
Some sound more lofty
I will trust in the name of my God.

Don’t get me wrong.  I want things to go well for our nation, our country, and I have my opinions about this election and what I hope for.

But, that hope will never come in the form of a man, except the Man, Jesus Christ.  Where all others are imperfect and fall short, He never will.  He never fails.  And where others will lie or be proven false — His Word is always Truth.  He Himself is perfect Truth.  I want to stand on that foundation, put my trust in Him.  When it all comes down, everything will eventually be shaken (and perhaps already is), and the only safe place will be in the center of His holy flame, consumed with one passion and vision – to see Him glorified and see Him return as King of the Earth forever.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus!

Take my poll!

So, I had my first “Daddy Revelation”.  You know, those little snippets of God that people see/learn of when they become parents.  Here’s how it went down…

I was singing and playing keyboard, worshipping God all by myself in the church sanctuary.  I was singing this chorus:

Somehow my weak glance has overwhelmed You
Somehow my weak love has stolen away Your heart

These lyrics are based out of the Bible in Song of Songs 4:9- “You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes . . .”  In the allegory the “Lover” representing the Lord is saying this to the “Beloved”, representative of the Christ-follower.  Simply put, God is looking at you and saying, “YOU overwhelm me when you love me.”

Most people find the Song of Songs to be a challenge to relate to.  And, most people balk at verses like this, which suggest somehow that our All Powerful God could be moved in His heart, even overwhelmed, by the attention of one poor, weak soul like you or me, who loves Him back.

But, IT’S TRUE!  Even the slightest movement of our heart (“glance”) toward Him touches Him so deeply that He would say we have stolen His heart, to even conquered the Lover of All with our puny love.  It is an incredible trust to wrestle with.  Totally unbelievable to our minds….

So… what does this have to do with me and being a (new) Dad?  Here goes.  I was singing that chorus thinking the usual thoughts of, “Can this really be true?  It’s just so hard to REALLY believe it, that my love for God could affect Him so profoundly.  It’s hard for me to truly believe that I don’t have to somehow earn His love or be “good” so that He’ll want to love me.”  And as I’m wrestling with these thoughts in my head, I get see in my mind, my sweet 3 and a half month old daughter, Chloe.

I start thinking, “Oh, she’s so amazing.  I love her!  I’m totally in love with her!”

And it was like God’s Spirit saying, “That’s how I love you.”  All at once it made sense.  All I have to do is look at her, and my heart swells with pride and joy and I can’t help but explode with rejoicing and delight over her.  Really, that’s how I feel!  And, the funny thing is, she’s incapable of doing anything to “earn” my love and affection for her.  I love her because I love her, because I LOVE HER!  I just DO!  There’s no other reason.

And the Father (God) looks us in the face, smiles and says, “I love you because I love you, because I LOVE YOU!”  We can’t do anything to earn it, or to stop it!  He just does and He can’t help Himself — He loves us!

Chloe “SPEAKS”!!!

Greetings!

Life is pretty much ALL about baby right now.. we had a dedication service for her and a big party at our NEW place this past weekend — what a blast!!  Great to publicly dedicate Chloe to Jesus, hear His word over her, and to mingle with family and friends in celebration.  Check out some new pics of Chloe on the baby page: www.jessiestill.wordpress.com/the-baby.  Here are a few pics, from the dedication, the party and one of our new place..  they are thumbnails, so click on one to see it full size.

I hope to blog again soon on more “serious” stuff… the thread on “the church” still remains unfinished, and I know many of you were enjoying that discussion… In fact, if you have thoughts, post them as comments on this blog so I can put them in the pot I’m currently boiling. :)

First things first — new baby pics are on the baby page — I know that’s what most of you are interested in, anyway: www.jessiestill.wordpress.com/the-baby/ Click on that and enjoy.

I’m working on another post… but for now I’ll share this one that I really enjoyed about knowing Jesus for REAL and not settling for the cheap version that gets easier and easier to find…. enjoy: http://www.luke18project.com/Publisher/Article.aspx?id=1000032126

God is good.  No matter what.  :)
